HCC Girls Scholarship Program
Piloted in 2007, the HCC Girls' Scholarship Program supports needy girls
in Sandema and its surrounding communities. Since HCC started as a project
for street children, boys naturally became the first group of residents.
This does not mean that girls do not experience profound poverty and suffering.
Simply put, girls are too valuable to a family to live a life on the streets.
Girls continue to bear the heavy burden of domestic work in Sandema, and this often
limits their educational opportunities.
The HCC's Girls' Scholarship program provides money for girls who
wish to continue their studies but lack the financial support for fees
and other education costs. The criteria includes:
- Financial need
- High academic achievements
- A demonstrated commitment to the local community
We are currently supporting 11 girls at the secondary school level. Scholarships are renewable based on academic performance and those girls wishing to pursue their education to college or university will continue to receive support.
